Metrosexual Man: What Is It?

Published by drjim under curture Edit This

Metrosexual Man:What Is It/
I am hearing this term more and more so I decided to check it out. So here is what I discovered.

You know what a heterosexual man is. You have certainly heard of homosexual men. Now there’s the metrosexual man. Metro-sexual? That’s right; it’s the newest breed, or classification of men. Hollywood is full of metro-sexual men. Will Smith and Tom Cruise are prime examples. Now, more and more, many guys in everyday towns are walking around strutting their peacock feathers, proud to be metro sexual. Remember the big to-do about whether or not real men ate quiche? Well now not only are they eating quiche, they’re wearing salmon colored dress shirts; getting manicures and pedicures; having their hair highlighted; frequent tanning salons; and are enjoying overall makeovers. And the women absolutely love it!

Enter the Montel Williams show. Wife complains that hubby has had his beard for the last 23 years, wears the same jeans and sweatshirt, so much so that his pants can walk by themselves. He’s in a time warp, still wearing a mullet and fashions a dangling chain affixed to his wallet. After the commercial break: Tada! Cleaned up, spiffed up, shaved up and made up husband walks out on stage and the little wife about falls over as her jaw drops to the floor! She’s excited! She can’t believe her eyes! This man is HOT! Her boring, stuck in the mud hum drum husband for the last two decades has stepped out into the new millennium (finally!) and Mrs. can’t wait to be alone with her new and improved man! That may have been one episode, but with increasing numbers, metro-sexual men are emerging. Word of caution men, you may not want to have all the pomp and circumstance that Montel had on his show with the complete and utter total makeover all at once. Start with a new hairdo, and then go for some highlights.

Don’t worry; there will be other men in the salon with foil on their hair. It’s getting more and more common. Next let a good manicurist get a hold of your paws. Do it in small incremental steps. You’ll get used to the idea better and the woman in your life will enjoy growing into the new you, along side you. Women, you’re going to have to clear out some bathroom space. You new metro-sexual man needs drawer and shower space for all his “product.” He’s now moisturizing, toning, conditioning, gelling, chillin’ out, maxin’ and relaxin’. It’s been acceptable for ions for women to primp. It’s about time the men had their turn!

So what do you think?

An Unforgetable Vacation

Published by drjim under Wellbeing, curture Edit This

If you are looking for a vacation not easy to forget, plan on taking yours on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. From breathtaking ocean views to panoramic sunrises high atop Mount Haleakala, Maui is the undisputable playground of Hawaii. And whether you are enjoying luscious treks through bamboo forests or coasting your bicycle down 10,000 feet of volcano, there is almost nothing you cannot do on Maui. If there is a heaven, Maui is the road that gets you there.

Some History…

Maui is the second largest island in the chain of eight known as the Hawaiian Islands. Captain James Cook discovered the islands in 1778 while on his third expedition to Alaska. His search for the Northwest Passage linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans would forever change Hawaii, its culture and its people.

In 1894, during Sanford Dole’s Presidency, the United States recognized the Republic of Hawaii and made it an official territory in 1900. Over the next century, sugar established itself as the leading industry and the heavy farming of pineapples a close second. The island of Lanaii was bought for the sole purpose of growing pineapples.

Towards the end of the 20th century with land prices on the increase and competition from other parts of the world, sugar and pineapples became less profitable. And while the sugar industry is all but dead on the islands, pineapples are still grown commercially on Maui and Kauaii. Tourism would become Hawaii’s most popular industry and getaway location.

Getting There…

Unless you live on Maui, the only way to get there is by plane or boat. Cruises are great if you have the time, but if you want to get there quick, hop on a jet. When planning your trip a travel agent can be helpful. However, the Internet has become the preferred choice of shopping some great deals. You will want your hotel and transportation lined up before you get to the island. Travel agents are also great resources for researching activity packages.

Depending on your departure location, expect flight time to be about six hours. Do not worry; you will have a few in-flight movies and a little pillow time to make your flight tolerable and comfortable. Here’s a short list of some stuff you will want to bring. Obviously, you will not bring everything on this list, but you can use it as a guideline when planning your unforgettable Maui vacation.

* A hat or cap for sun protection
* Large insulated water jug to keep in the car
* Waterproof sunblock, SPF 15 or higher
* Bathing suits for plenty of swimming opportunities
* Shoes, thongs or throwaway sneakers, reef shoes, hiking shoes
* A light rain jacket
* Camera with lots of film, or megabytes for that digital crowd
* Mask, snorkel and fins
* Warm clothes (for the top - Haleakala trip)
* Shorts and other cool cotton clothing (for the bottom)
* Mosquito repellent for hiking (lotions with Deet, rather than liquids, seem to work the best and last the longest)
* A fanny pack

A Little Geography…

The island of Maui is made up of two volcanoes. The largest mountain on the east side of the island is known as Haleakala, or “house of the sun”. The other great mountain on the west side was originally called Pu’u Kuku’i, or “hill of the candlenut tree”. That was later changed to West Maui Mountain.

Of the two, West Maui Mountain is the oldest. Streams cut deep into its slopes, which cascade into majestic waterfalls. Hiking is treacherous here but there are plenty of helicopter tours, complete with music and song, to enjoy them. Take plenty of film for this ride.

Haleakala is the youngest mountain. At just over 10,000 feet, the view from the top is breathtaking. The drive will take a little over two hours, barring any stops or side trips. Bring some warm clothing because it gets cold! And make sure you leave early enough to catch the sunrise. Nothing else beats it. Be sure to snap a few pictures of the “Silver Sword” before you leave. Silver Swords are native to the island and you will not find this plant anywhere else in the world.

Hot Spots…

Maui is full of places to see and explore. Here are a few to add to your must see list.

Haleakala

Start your Haleakala trip early in the morning. You will want to catch this sunrise to start your day. Bring some warm clothing and hiking equipment. There are 27 miles of trails on Haleakala so bring plenty of film to capture the incredible views from inside the crater. There is “Sliding Sands Trail” which descends 2,400 feet and the hike around 3 8/10ths miles each way. The “Halemau’u Trail” is about four miles each way at 1,400 feet. And for the professional hikers, there is “Kaupo Trail” which descends all the way down the mountain. But you can only access this trail if you are camping, so plan accordingly.

Road to Hana

The Road to Hana has been dubbed the Crown Jewel of Hawaii and the most desired drive of all the islands. This two-lane highway with many one-way bridges has been compared to the Garden of Eden. All told, there are about 600 turns on this winding road filled with lush forests and beautiful waterfalls. Speed limit on Hana road is a whopping 35 miles per hour, so do not expect getting anywhere fast. As the Chinese say, “Fulfillment is in the journey, not the destination”.

Banyan Tree Park

Located in Lahaina, this park is a must see. As you look into the park, it appears as though there are many trees, but in reality, it is one tree. This tree is so big it encompasses the entire park! Some other sites around the park include the old courthouse, Baldwin House (reported to be the oldest house on the island), and the old prison.

Dragon’s Teeth at Kapalua

Located near Kapalua, this lava formation resembling dragon’s teeth owe its creation to the wind and sea. During the great lava flows, turbulent winds and ocean waves pushed shards of cooling lava upwards toward the sky, giving the formation its unique dragon teeth shape.

These are just some of the wonderful sites you will experience on your unforgettable Maui vacation. There are plenty of vacation guides covering every aspect, nook and cranny of Maui, so plan wisely and plan it now. Mahalo…

Special Operations Preparation Course

Published by drjim under curture Edit This

When you graduate from Airborne School you will be sent to the 30-day Special Operations Preparation Course taught at Fort Bragg. This course will help you prepare for the Special Forces Assessment and Selection course. It focuses on physical training and one of the most important skills a SF soldier can have-land navigation. This course does not guarantee you will pass the Special Forces Assessment/Assignment and Selection (SFAS).

Special Forces Assessment/Assignment and Selection
This is 24 days of training like you’ve never experienced. And it’s all about survival. Your intelligence, agility and resourcefulness will all be tested. If you make it, you can continue on to the SF Qualification Course.

Special Forces Qualification Course
The SFQC consists of five phases (II-VI). If you complete this training, you will be a Special Forces Soldier, one of the Army’s experts in Unconventional Warfare.

Individual Skills - This phase is roughly 13 weeks and includes training in Small Unit Tactics, SF Tactics, Survival Skills and Language and Cultural Training.

MOS Qualification - You will receive MOS training for your Special Forces MOS. This phase is about 15 weeks long and includes additional language training, SF Common tasks, Advanced Special Operations Techniques (ASOT), and Interagency Operations.

The Special Forces has six enlisted Military Occupational Specialties (MOS’s):18B - SF Weapons Sergeant; 18C - SF Engineer Sergeant; 18D - SF Medical Sergeant; 18E - SF Communications Sergeant; 18F - SF Assistant Operations and Intelligence Sergeant; and 18Z Special Forces Operations Sergeant.

Language Training - Based your language skills, you will advance through language training to get ready to serve in the SF. Additionally, while receiving language training you will be trained in warrior skills, such as Combatives. This phase may take up to 14 weeks.

Collective Training - You will hone your SF skills in a realistic Unconventional Warfare (UW) practical exercise. This phase takes about 4 weeks.

SERE Course - In the extremely realistic Survival, Escape, Resistance, and Evasion (SERE) course, you will learn combat survival tactics.

Live Environment Training
As an SF Soldier, you might receive training that completely immerses you in another culture. You’ll learn to be fluent in that country’s language, customs and traditions, becoming a virtual citizen of that country.

If you still think you have what it takes to join the Army’s elite Green Beret, then its time to contact an Army Recruiter and ask about the Special Forces Contract.

Bali Beads-What Are They ?

Published by drjim under curture Edit This

What? You have never heard of Bali Beads before? Well, after you have read this article, you will be a Bali Bead expert.

Let’s start with where these beads are made.

You get two guesses and the first one doesn’t count.

Obviously, Bali Beads are made in Bali, which lies between the islands of Java and Lombok and is one of the 17 thousand islands that make up the Indonesian Archipelago.

Bali Beads are a large part of the Bali people’s beliefs, traditions and history. As the island has over recent years become a popular tourist resort, the demand and market for Bali Beads has increased and has therefore become much more worldwide than previously.

The metal smiths of Bali have been making beads for many hundreds of years and some readers may be surprised to know that the market in silver beads started as recently as the 1970’s geared to the growing tourist market. Traditionally the Balinese people would wear similar style beads but in high-grade gold.

For centuries, Balinese artists have perfected their skills. Communities specialize in specific artistic traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. As a result, Bali silversmiths display superb technique and immense patience. Each bead is carefully made with exquisite detail. Every silver dot is individually placed, every surface patterned by hand. Each bead is a work of art. No two is exactly alike.

Bali beads can be used to create beautifully crafted beaded jewelry. The beads are often used to make bracelets, necklaces, earrings or piercing decorations.

The beads range in size and shape from small round beads to large cones and other shaped beads. A very effective pair of earrings can simply be made from a couple of silver Bali Beads matched with a lovely gemstone bead.

A true Bali Bead will be made of silver but fine silver is too soft for general use, so for jewelry making purposes about 7.5% of copper is mixed with 92.5% pure silver. This is called sterling silver.

The purpose of mixing the metal is to get the hardness necessary yet still soft enough to create items into the shapes and sizes wanted.

Then there is Cast Bali Beads. A much quicker process, less labor intensive than the hand crafted beads. The use of hi-tech casting equipment produces a high quality product with quick production times.

There are also imitations. These are called Bali “style” beads, which may be a base metal or even plastic that has been plated. These are fine since you are aware of what you are buying and they are priced accordingly.

So the old axiom is still in affect let the buyer beware. Unless you are making a quick trip to Bali, you will be typically buying these beads by mail order or over the Internet. It would be in your best interest to know the supplier and if they have a good reputation. If you are buying via Ebay, does the sellers have good feedback or are there any suggestions or concerns about the quality of their goods?

These are all concerns we must have in buying anything over the Internet but you now know all the right questions to ask and you should be adorning your body with beautiful Bali Beads in the very near future.

Coffee’s Antioxidants Are Good For Us

Published by drjim under curture Edit This

Getting eight hours of rest, a good diet and taking multivitamins are the best ways to maintain a healthy body. But did people know that drinking coffee is also beneficial because it has antioxidants?

This was discovered after researchers did further tests to check if there are any effects of drinking coffee aside from increased alertness. Studies conclude that taking two to three cups daily can prevent various diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, depression and the prevention of cavities.

Another study shows that the antioxidants contained in coffee are more effective than those coming from fruits and vegetables. This is because not all of the nutrients here have done much to protect the individual from various diseases.

Aside from coffee, other substances that also contains caffeine, which can help boost the immune system, are tea and chocolate. Red wine or beer is also helpful but these must be consumed in moderation.

Green coffee beans for example have something inside called chlorogenic acid. This is an antioxidant that helps regulate the digestive system and makes the body absorb oxygen much better than other liquids.

Regular black coffee on the other hand has caffeic acid, melanoidins and N-methylpyridinium.

There are people who drink coffee with cream, milk or sugar. Even if one or all three are mixed with coffee, the level of antioxidants remains the same so people can still reap the benefits of drinking it.

So, the next time you go to a café and decide to get a drink, chances are coffee will be ordered instead of a cup of tea. You will just have to choose from the different variants now available which could be either hot or cold.

Studies have shown that there is nothing wrong with drinking more than three cups of coffee daily. Some people are able to do it while others can’t. The best thing to do is know when enough is enough. After all, there is always tomorrow and it isn’t that difficult to brew up a new batch. By engaging in other things that will benefit one’s lifestyle, you will surely live until one is in 70’s or 80’s.

The only ones who shouldn’t drink coffee are those who are pregnant, are suffering from heart disease or children who will become restless with the excess energy due to the caffeine.
